Yesterday morning, my mom and I got up bright and early in the cool, 62 degrees morning to finally plant our plants that had been sitting in those Lowe’s plastic bags for the past two weeks. Thank goodness they didn’t die! We have an assortment of green, red, and orange bell peppers, aloe vera plants, dill, cilantro, basil, lots of pink and purple and orange flowers, strawberries, tomatoes, red hot chile peppers that I picked out myself because nobody else wanted them, and chamomile that I planted from seeds. It was so fun and relaxing. Too bad I didn’t have a tree to plant for Earth Day, but I think I did good enough!

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera

Who knew aloe vera plants spread like wildfire?! We started out with one and now we have about 8!

Strawberries

Strawberries

These were planted in a special strawberry pot with holes in the sides of it. But the first time I picked up the pot, full of dirt, by the holes, the top broke off from the bottom! Lesson learned.

A Dill Plant

It’s So Yummy!!!

Huzzah! The fruits of labor have finally been brought down to me from the Heavens!

A couple of weeks ago, I started growing a dill plant straight from the seed! I almost never start from a seed, and when I do, it usually doesn’t work. I’m so excited! I have a bunch of other seeds for different plants that I’m going to start to grow this afternoon. They’re easy things like other spices, microgreens, strawberries, and of course flooooooooowers! Starting a garden really makes it feel like Spring!

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!

Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine

Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine

I learned about this book from my school. Right now they’re having this “One Book One School” event where if you read the book and take a test on it, you get to go to this pizza party. So, when I was walking around the public library, I saw it and decided to get it. It was a good choice.

I’ve never read anything like this, where the author portays a child with Aspergers and talks about how they feel and think from first person. I thought it was really inspiring. When you pair this with the school shootings epidemic that’s been going on lately, this story can really evoke a lot of emotion and tears. I know it did for me.

Mockingbird is about a girl named Caitlin, who has Aspergers. Her brother is killed in a school shooting that sets her and especially her father into a kind of confusion and depression, except Caitlin doesn’t understand alot of her father’s actions and emotions. With the help of her teacher, Mrs. Brook, Caitlin learns about herself and other people when they deal with certain situations.

(P.S.! Thank you guys for all the likes and views yesterday. It was my “Most Liked Day”!)

Allen Stone

Allen Stone

Lately, I have been rocking out to some pretty cool music. One of my recently favorited albums is Allen Stone’s self-titled album. I found out about him while watching Vh1’s You Oughta Know segment on fine Saturday morning while doing my laundry. They broadcasted his most popular song Sleep. It was so catchy I had it stuck in my head all day and then proceeded to look up the rest of his album which presently sits on its’ own playlist on my Sony Walkman.
I would describe his music as soulful, acoustic, and slightly bluesey. A nice break from my rap music fascination that I’ve seemed to have adopted lately. This is a list of the album’s songs, the ones in bold I adore (though I’m still in love with the whole thing!).
1. Sleep
2. Celebrate Tonight
3. What I’ve Seen
4. Say So
5. The Wind
6. Satisfaction
7. Contact High
8. Nothing To Prove
9. Your Eyes
10. Unaware

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

This was…unexpected! I heard of this novel from the Goodreads Choice Awards (2012 Nominee) and thought the title sounded interesting so I got it from the library. I really didn’t know what to expect from this book, but whatever it was, was pretty good!
Clay is sucked into the Great Recession and loses his job at as a website designer for a bagel compnay. When he starts looking for a new job in San Francisco, he stumbles across Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. This starts him on a path though secret societies and codes and lots of technology.

The Maze Runner by James Dasner

The Maze Runner by James Dasner

This book blew my mind! I picked it up during reading time in my LAnguage Arts class just because I’d forgotten my other book for the day, and this book just lept out of the pages and hooked on to me. I could barely put it down!

The Maze Runner, in my opinion, is like a phychological action-thriller. Jam-packed with monsters and secrets and huge shocks. Every chapter was more stunning than the last. By the time you get about 2/3 through it, you just have no idea what could happen next! It’s just perfect!

Is this book a movie yet? I sure hope so because I’m going to go see it next weekend if it is. I’ll also be running to the bookstore to get the sequel.

Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

Oh my goodness!!! I wish I could give this book a million stars!! It was so gripping I literally couldn’t put it down, I read it all in one night! This was SCARY! Not reccomended for younger children or maybe even middle schoolers, like me. It was very, very detailed. But, that makes it great for anyone else looking for an extremely well-written zombie apocalypse thiller. The romance aspect was wonderful as well and gets even better as the book progresses. Can’t wait for the sequel and the movie!

Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler

You go girl! He was totally a jerk!
Why We Broke Up is the best romance/love story I’ve ever read. Although I haven’t really read that many, it was still very good. I love the artwork in this book. It’s so simple yet conveys the image perfectly. Kudos to Maira Kalman. Woah! I totally did not expect that ending! I would be so mad if that happened to me. I think my favorite character is Al. Also, the first-person point of view, the cool setting, I loved it!

WE HAVE FOUND JESUS! That just cracks me up! I live in such a religious town, we get those kinds of people at my door about once a week!

This one of the easiest pretzel recipes I’ve seen in a long time. Everyone should have a homemade pretzel at some point in their life. They’re just so classic! My idea would be to make a big, gigantic bunch of these and take them to a picnic at a park or something of the sort.

Yesterday I shared with you the buffalo wings that we had for our appetizer supper. They were awesome, but we also had a soft pretzel with cheese sauce on the side. Equally delicious.

I have been planning to try these for a while. A tattered piece of paper with this recipe on it sat in my kitchen for months. It happens, I tear items out of magazines and throw them into a holding pattern for months at a time, waiting until the “perfect” moment, or most likely when it happens to fall in front of my eyes again during a cleaning spell.

Months ago, I tore this from a penzey’s magazine, after showing it to my husband who voiced his interest. To my surprise, when I returned from yoga class the other night, he had found this recipe and made the dough. Yep, he’s a keeper.

Then we whipped up a simple…

The Vinyl Princess by Yvonne Prinz

Allie is a 16-year old girl who works in a vinyl record store called Bob & Bob Records. This story talks about her summer working there. During the summer, she starts a blog and a zine, undercover, called The Vinyl Princess about music reviews and soon it’s rocketing into fame. This story also talks about her mom and how she’s starting to date again after getting a divorce with Allie’s dad. It’s pretty good, but that might just be because I’m a music junkie since I didn’t really see that much suspense in the plot. So, I would probably give it 4 out of 5 stars. I’m still putting it on my to-buy list, though.

This is a link to the actual blog if you want to check it out, but it’s a little dated; http://thevinylprincess.com/
